Our Background

RosaryOur Lady of Lourdes Catholic School is a parish school of the Catholic Diocese of Savannah.  We serve students from Columbus, Fort Benning, Phenix City and surrounding areas.  By offering individual attention to every child, we strive to promote the academic, social, physical, emotional and spiritual growth of each of our students.  Students are not required to be, nor become, Catholic in order to attend Our Lady of Lourdes.

Our Lady of Lourdes seeks to enroll students from all ethnic, racial and socio-economic backgrounds who possess average to above-average academic ability.  We currently do not offer programs for students with significant learning disabilities or emotional problems.  Our diverse student body comprises several nationalities and backgrounds including numerous students whose parents are stationed at Fort Benning.

Our school emphasizes all aspects of the Catholic school tradition: spirituality, rigorous academics, athletics, fine arts and a commitment to high moral values.  Uniforms are mandatory for grades kindergarten through eighth and optional for our pre kindergarten program.  Our Student Code of Conduct is strictly enforced. Homework is an integral part of the school program at all grade levels, providing vital training for high school and beyond.  Participation in religious instruction and liturgies is an integral part of the Lourdes experience.  We are accredited by the Florida Catholic Conference and SACS (the Southern Association of College & Schools).

Ursuline Sisters CrestOur History

Our school was established by Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in August 1960, to serve the children of Fort Benning and South Columbus.   Our Lady of Lourdes was staffed by ten Ursuline Sisters from Cork, Ireland, who established a core curriculum based on the strict guidelines of the Diocese of Savannah.  The nuns continued to run the school until 1997, when they were called home to Ireland.

Throughout our long, successful history, Lourdes students have consistently scored above local, state and national performance on standardized tests and 90% of our graduates attend college preparatory schools such as Pacelli High School and Columbus High School.

Our Name

"I do not promise to make you happy in this life, but in the next."
--The Most Blessed Virgin Mary
to Saint Bernadette during the
Second Marian Apparition at Lourdes

LourdesIn 1858, in the grotto of Massabielle, near Lourdes in southern France, Our Lady appeared 18 times to Bernadette Soubirous, a young peasant girl.

She revealed herself as the Immaculate Conception, asked that a chapel be built on the site of the vision, and told the girl to drink from a fountain in the grotto.

No fountain was to be seen, but when Bernadette dug at a spot designated by the apparition, a spring began to flow. The water from this still flowing spring has shown remarkable healing power, though it contains no curative property that science can identify.

Lourdes has become the most famous modern shrine of Our Lady.
